Critics Not Entirely Blown Away By MacGruber

There were rumors of a MacGruber movie for a long time, and now it is finally here. The Saturday Night Live parody of MacGyver was a hit with fans, and it made for some great commercials, but it is not much of a hit with critics. It can be duking it out with Shrek Forever After for box office supremacy. So far, the reviews have been somewhat positive, but kind of lukewarm.

MacGruber on the big screen

After the wildly popular skits and Super Bowl spots, MacGruber is now a feature film. This SNL related film could be competing for fast cash loans from the box office against a film with an SNL alumnus, Mike Meyers, in the lead role. MacGruber is a send up of 1980s action heroes, complete with a mullet. Nevertheless, the target audience may be regrettably unaware of the stereotypical character, such as Nada from John Carpenter’s They Live or MacGyver. Kurt Loder is not amused, though the Rotten Tomatoes page on MacGruber gives it a rating slightly over 50 percent.

No a lot more Shrek Forever After this sequel

There can be no Shrek sequels forever after Shrek Forever After. It is another sequel, and Rotten Tomatoes gives it just over a 50 percent rating also. Sequels often fail to capture the sizzle of the first film, though some franchises are just bad to start with (Transformers, for example.) It is in 3D, though. It may be at least interesting visually.

So far, so good, so what

If you've seen the MacGruber trailer, you know what you're in for. It will be lowbrow, but it may be funny. It seems SNL movies just aren't what they used to be, but considering that they've had several flops to every success, a quality SNL film is a rare bird. The new Shrek film, like many other movies these days, is relying on 3D to sell it. Just as the visuals are good doesn’t mean the film isn’t really garbage overall. Unfortunately, most individuals think that 3D makes anything great.
