Court Case involving Arpaio, famous governor, as well as the Department of Justice in battle

Sheriff Joe suspected of discrimination

The first investigation was launched on suspicion the tactics employed by Sheriff Joe Arpaio deliberately target Hispanics, irrespective of legal status, in order to “sweep” illegal immigrants. The Maricopa County Sheriff sends deputies into heavily Hispanic areas, where they will stop everyone for minor reasons, according to the Los Angeles Times. When there with the individuals, deputies had one job to complete. They were expected to verify immigration status. Doing this was expected by everybody. It was even expected before Arizona immigration law was in place. The Justice Department requested documentation on these sweeps from Sheriff Arpaio, which he was loathe to comply with. Allegedly, he denied federal investigators access to buildings and refused to hand over requested material.

Lawsuits normal

The Maricopa Sheriff has had lawsuits before. His jail is called Tent City and has tents within the desert with high fences with barbed wire around it, and many have sued him for family dying in this jail. There is also an ongoing investigation into the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office including Sheriff Arpaio by the grand jury. This is happening, reports ABC as a result of corruption. The Office got the request for materials and paperwork through a year ago. This originated from the Justice Department. A federal judge found the Sheriff’s Office had wrecked documents pertaining to the sweeps in question that attorneys suing Arpaio’s department were entitled to view.
