The literary sub-genre of zombie lit has been exploding, thanks to a modern zombie film renaissance. After some very successful zombie films like 28 Days Later and the remake of Dawn of the Dead, some authors were quick to capitalize on the popularity of the zombie genre. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and World War Z were some of probably the most popular. Brad Pitt was recently confirmed to star in World War Z. The eve of destruction by zombies
In 2003, the wildly popular book The Zombie Survival Guide was released, and also the author wrote World War Z as a type of follow up. It is a practical guide on dealing with the undead. In 2006, World War Z was released as a collection of interviews with zombie apocalypse survivors. The author is Max Brooks, son of Mel Brooks and a previous writer for Saturday Night Live. It was optioned in 2007 and has been waiting to get off the ground.
The film may not be the pits
According to MTV, it was announced at Comic-Con in San Diego that Brad Pitt has been confirmed to star. Paramount also has opportunities on some of Max Brooks’ other work. The director is intended to be Marc Forster, the director of Quantum of Solace, but that could change at any moment. Fewer zombie films are getting made than in the past few years, so it may be a sign of the resurgent zombie renaissance being on the wane.
Not the only zombie film in the works
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is also in the works, as well as the film version of World War Z. Natalie Portman will star in the hodgepodge of Jane Austen with ninjas and zombies rampant within the English countryside. The number of zombie films has toned down in lieu of melodramatic and insipid vampires and werewolves, but World War Z appears to be set to be epic.
