Obama and immigration reform are a fiery pair

Arizona’s immigration law is settling in for the long haul, and President Obama doesn’t want immigration matters to be given the political cold shoulder by Senate Republicans. The Associated Press reports that in a recent speech at American University, President Obama called the immigration stance of 11 Republican senators into question. While they’d been with the president on immigration reform in the past, election-year back scratching has them blowing with the wind.

Obama’s calls for immigration reform won’t be silenced

Although the president is not the biggest fan of the new Arizona law (he finds it to be “ill-conceived,” as he said just lately), it is an effective tool that highlights just how much he wants to get done. The system in place is certainly broken, and new fences and agents won’t change that entirely. Government should be held responsible for border security, Obama stated. At the exact same time, companies who hire illegal's should face heavy fines. Those who do enter The United States illegally should also take responsibility for their actions and quickly work to rectify the wrong by working to become citizens. Achieving this will require bipartisan commitment, something the president clearly understands.

What the GOP had to say in their defense

Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl, one of those receiving Obama’s immigration ire, claims that border security must be addressed before “comprehensive immigration reform,” if the two can in fact be separated and wiped clean of political doubletalk. Other Republicans follow in this manner. AP polls say the bulk of individuals want government action, so maybe the Republicans should get on their horse and join the charge.

Obama on immigration – His road

Obama endorses the immigration bill of Sens. Chuck Schumer and Lindsey Graham, who place the onus on the illegal immigrant to own up to their misdeeds. With the ultimate goal of citizenship in mind, illegal immigrants would pay back taxes, fines and perform community service. Unfortunately, Lindsey Graham has backed down on doing anything about immigration reform this year.

SB 1070 is just a single step

Total accountability will unite the causes of immigration reform and border security. Obama’s hopes for SB 1070 will sound the call loud and clear the U.S. is fed up with the status quo. Inaction is no longer acceptable; in fact, repeating it would be an admission that one condones the broken system.
