Colombian military seizes drug smuggling submarine

Colombian authorities conducting a sting operation seized a drug smuggling submarine. These crafts aren’t true submarines as they don’t entirely submerge but rather cruise along with only section of the hull over water. They’re not very easily detected. Crafts of this type can’t be detected by sonar.

Teaming up to discover operation of drug smuggling

The Daily Mail reports that an operation with the air force, navy and Colombian Inspector General's office with Columbian authorities has led to a huge drug smugglers bust. There was drug smuggling going on in the swamps near the town of Timbiqui near the region of Cauca. The swamps led to the sea as Cuaca is on the Pacific coast of Colombia. The drug submarine was already loaded with eight tons of cocaine and contained computers for navigation and bunks for a four-man crew. There were no persons aboard the craft when it was found, but some firearms were recovered along with the cargo.

Only option for next step would be smuggling

The boat was a new breed of drug smuggling submersibles or Narco Subs even though they have been used for years. Fiberglass and other materials are used to make the subs which cost drug cartels millions of dollars. Still, they are only used once lots of the time. A drug smuggling submersible isn’t ordinarily a true submarine, in that the boat can’t entirely submerge. However, the boat recovered from Timbiqui was capable of descending to nine meters, or about 40 feet, for extended periods. It would have been possible for the 105-foot boat to get to land, the Wall Street Journal reports. It may have hit Mexico or the United States.

Finding the drug cartels

The methods for getting drugs in the United States have been something drug cartels have gradually become craftier about. Drug submersibles have been known about for the past several years and were referred to as “Bigfoot” for some time because none had been captured or seen. More are being found now though after one was captured years ago. The after that move will most likely be remote controlled drug submersibles since the subs that can submerge are being created now by drug cartels.
