379 Harpo employees go meatless during Oprah Vegan Challenge

On her Feb. 1 show, Oprah debuted the "Oprah Vegan Challenge". This vegan challenge was relatively basic. All animal products got cut out of the diet of 378 staffers and Oprah for a week. Oprah’s vegan challenge was in an effort to encourage “conscious consuming." You don’t need a payday loan to cut out meat for a while.

379 vegans in Oprah’s Vegan Challenge

For one week preceding the Feb. 1 episode of Oprah’s talk show, the entire staff of Harpo Productions went vegan. Oprah was included in the 379 individuals who went vegan. All animal merchandise were cut out. This is similar to the 2008 “vegan cleanse” Oprah took on. Reports are the Vegan Challenge was difficult for the entire staff, but most did make it through the entire week.

What the Vegan Challenge means people can be doing

Oprah's staff stopped using animal products for a week as part of the Vegan Challenge. Many definitions vary from person to person. Nevertheless, "vegan" is usually somebody who does not use any product that animals create. Meat can't be eaten. No form of it’s allowed. Milk and dairy merchandise are out. Eggs are out, as is honey and other things that is the product of an animal. The part of the vegan lifestyle that involves avoiding animal merchandise in everyday life including silk and leather was not part of the Oprah Winfrey Vegan Challenge.

The way the Oprah Vegan Challenge will impact the environment

The episode of Oprah about the Vegan Challenge had guests on there. “Eating lower on the food chain," was discussed in particular as it effects the environment. Meat and animal products inherently leave more of an impact on the environment because the animals must be fed and cared for, and they’re often treated with antibiotics. "Meatless Mondays" or "weekday vegetarianism" is a suggestion that environmental advocates suggest. This is a way to keep your lifestyle but impact the environment. The Oprah Vegan Challenge did not turn all 379 individuals that work for Harpo into lifetime vegans or vegetarians, but it has encouraged more individuals to more carefully consider what they eat.
